Common Mistakes When Writing Create-Level Prompts
Confusing "make" with "create." "Make a poster of the water cycle" is Understand. Real Create tasks require students to make design choices — what to include, what to omit, why this approach.
Grading craftsmanship instead of thinking. If your rubric weights "neatness" or "visual appeal" over reasoning, you're grading art class, not cognitive synthesis. Weight design choices highest — why this element, why this order, why this omission.
Underspecifying constraints. "Design a solution" without constraints produces generic outputs. Real design lives in trade-offs. Add: "with a budget under $500," or "using only materials found in a classroom," or "in under 300 words."
Ignoring the plan stage. Skipping straight from prompt to product hides the thinking. Require an outline, design sketch, or plan document scored separately from the final product.
