Phases
Name: Warm-up
Minutes: 5
Purpose: Activates what students already know about breathing, exercise, and plants so they have a reason to care about the breath-test data that comes next. It surfaces the common misconception that we 'breathe in oxygen and breathe out air' (or that plants only make oxygen). It also introduces bromothymol blue (BTB) as a CO₂ indicator, which the I Do and We Do phases depend on.

Q1. Our BTB turned yellow faster after jumping jacks. Use our data to explain why an exercising animal adds more CO₂ to its environment.
Q2. What removes CO₂ from an ecosystem, and what evidence from today supports this?
