Background: Have you ever watched a pot of water boil on a stove and noticed the water swirling and moving even before the bubbles start? That movement is caused by a process called **convection**, one of the three main types of **heat transfer**. Heat transfer is the movement of thermal energy from one object or substance to another. Convection specifically occurs in fluids — liquids and gases — and is driven by differences in **density**.
When water is heated, its molecules move faster and spread farther apart. This makes the water less dense, meaning a given volume of it weighs less than the same volume of cooler water. Because warm water is less dense, it rises toward the surface. At the same time, cooler, denser water sinks toward the bottom. This rising and sinking creates circular patterns of movement called **convection currents**. These currents transfer thermal energy from warmer regions to cooler regions, spreading heat throughout the fluid.
Convection currents are not just a classroom phenomenon — they drive some of Earth's most important systems. Ocean **water currents** are powered by temperature and density differences in seawater, transporting heat energy from the equator toward the poles and shaping global climates. Convection in Earth's mantle moves tectonic plates. Even the wind patterns in our atmosphere are a form of convection. In today's lab, you will use food coloring to make these invisible currents visible and investigate how **temperature** differences influence the strength and direction of convection currents in water.
