Common examples include **copper chloride** (CuCl₂), **lithium chloride** (LiCl), and **potassium chloride** (KCl). When these salts are placed in a flame, the heat vaporizes the compound and excites the metal's electrons. Because each metal has a unique **atomic structure** — a specific arrangement of electrons in energy levels — each metal produces a characteristic **flame color** that acts like a fingerprint for that element.
Scientists use this property in a technique called **flame spectroscopy** to identify unknown substances. In today's lab, you will perform flame tests on known metal salts and use your data to understand the relationship between atomic structure and light emission. You will practice identifying your **independent variable** (the factor you change), your **dependent variable** (the factor you measure), and your **controlled variables** (factors you keep the same) to ensure a fair and valid experiment.
