Weights favor the two disciplinary core ideas the task targets: plate-driven uplift (MS-ESS2-3, Q1a-c) and weathering/erosion at varying time scales (MS-ESS2-2, Q2-3). Time-scale reasoning is scored separately under the crosscutting concept so it is not double-counted. The drawn models and the typed explanations are scored separately so students who explain well but draw poorly (or the reverse) receive targeted feedback. Total points are calculated as weighted percentages; teachers using raw points can sum the levels out of 20.
