Background: Have you ever grabbed a metal spoon that was sitting in a hot bowl of soup and burned your fingers? Or noticed that a wooden spoon sitting in the same bowl stays cool enough to touch? This difference is explained by a process called **heat transfer** — the movement of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler one. Heat always moves from areas of higher temperature to areas of lower temperature, and it can travel in three ways: **conduction**, **convection**, and **radiation**.
**Conduction** is the transfer of heat through direct contact between particles in a solid material. When one end of a solid rod is heated, the particles at that end vibrate faster and bump into neighboring particles, passing energy along the material. Metals are especially good conductors because they have loosely held electrons that can carry thermal energy quickly from particle to particle. Materials like wood and plastic have tightly bound particles that do not transfer energy as efficiently, making them **insulators** — materials that slow down the rate of heat transfer. **Convection** is heat transfer through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases), and **radiation** is heat transfer through electromagnetic waves that require no medium at all, like the warmth you feel from the sun.
In this lab, you will act as scientists investigating **conduction** by placing rods of different materials — metal, wood, and plastic — into hot water and measuring how quickly heat travels along each rod using temperature change over time. The **independent variable** — the factor you will deliberately change — is the type of material. The dependent variable — the factor you will measure — is the **temperature change** at the cool end of each rod over time. By keeping all other factors the same (controlled variables), you can fairly compare how well each material conducts heat.
